All About Domain Names
- How Domain Names Work
- You use Domain Names every time you type in a
Website Address such as www.TalkOfTheTownHosting.com.
You may not know it, but every Website has a hidden
Address called an IP Address. IP Addresses are numbers that look like
103.55.123.190. However, can you imagine trying to remember a number
like that. So to make it easier the web has a system called the Domain Name
System (DNS) that makes it possible to assign a unique name (Domain Name) to
each IP number or address. For example, think of an IP address as an
address for a house or business, such as the White House. The address, 1600
Pennsylvania Avenue is comparable to an IP address, and the name you know it
as, the White House, is comparable to a domain name.
These names are assigned to the IP address and are
stored on the Internet on a Name Server. When you type
www.TalkOfTheTownHosting.com into your web browser it sends a request to a Name
Server and asks for the IP Address. It then connects your browser to that
Website using the IP Address. |

- Each Website must have a unique Domain Name
assigned to it. You select the Domain Name and we work behind the scenes to make it all
happen.

- What is a Domain Name?
-
A Domain Name is your address on the web.
When you type www.TalkOfTheTownHosting.com in your browser it finds the site
associated with, or registered to the Domain Name of TalkOfTheTownHosting.com.
Think about your Domain Name
Before you rush out and choose your domain name or name your Website, you
might want to consider some basic logic. In the modern world of the
Internet, where people automatically turn to the Web for information, it
pays to have a domain name that reflects what your site or business is
all about.
A domain name that matches your brand or company name is very important.
The name that you use to advertise your product is the name that you will
want for your domain.
A Domain Name can be any combination of letters or numbers up to 63
characters. You can not use spaces, but you can use a "– " in the
name.
Don’t overlook your own name
- If you are starting a new business you could use
your name in the Domain Name. For example if your
name is Janet, and you design Websites you could use WebDesignByJanet.com
or DesignsBy-Janet.com. Also remember your town or street name. For example ElmStreetDesigns.com. You get the picture, so be creative.
We

Consider registering other extensions
- Once you find your Domain Name you might want to think about registering all
the major names like yours. TalkOfTheTownHosting.com also owns
TalkOfTheTownHosting.net. This keeps others from using your branded Domain
Name with a different extension in the future. As we do, you can easily
redirect your Domain Names to your main Website. If you entered TalkOfTheTownHosting.net you would go to TalkOfTheTownHosting.com. You can
easily do this in the Domain Manager after you register your names. Don't
worry about how to do this, because remember if you have a problem we offer
24/7 phone support and we can help you!
- Trade Names
- Be aware of trademarks in Domain Names. Example Yahoo.org would be a "no
no". If you want to check trademarks you can look it up online for free at
the government’s trademark office at
www.uspto.govhttp://www.uspto.gov.
Domain Name Extensions
- Domain Names have extensions like "dot com" This is the oldest and most
recognized extension. It stands for "Commercial" and was originally supposed
to be used to identify a company Website. "Dot org" is an organization
like a church or club, and "dot net" was a networking company like
Talk Of The Town Hosting. "Dot com" Domain Names are the hardest to find,
however they are the easiest to remember. So be creative when you select a
Domain Name.
There are many Domain Name Extensions, but here are a
few common ones:
